‘What am I to do now?’
I looked at the confused mother holding the door of my car, preventing me (not deliberately) from getting into the car. You had to pity her. Here was a widow who had single handedly raised her only daughter whose father had died when she was just three years old. That was some seventeen years back!

Uche’s look was one of shock and utter amazement as Angela finished speaking. Angela had narrated her ordeal in between sobs for about twenty minutes. Now she sat, head bowed, whimpering as she tried to gather her emotions!
“Well, you’ve heard all she’s said. What do you have to say? I asked the mystified young man standing before us. There were four of us; three ladies and one man (me) in the panel that was set up by the College to investigate an allegation of rape against Uche!
I was a bit angry with the young man but I must confess that I felt sorry for him also. He was simply an ignorant young man.
“I can’t believe this is happening!” Uche barely muttered.
“We are not asking you if you believe it or not. Is she telling the truth? That’s all we need to know.” Professor Smith asked glaring at Uche.
I could see that as far as Professor Smith was concerned, Uche was done for! In truth, the looks on the faces of the three ladies were clear. It would take a miracle to keep Uche at the College!
“What do you have to say?” I asked Uche again.
He was close to tears and I could see that we weren’t likely to get much out of him. From Angela’s story, she had been dating Uche for two months. They had gone out on several dates and I guess they both felt there was something getting started. Naturally, Uche showered Angela with gifts, Cards and Flowers. Angela reciprocated and they shared a few kisses now and again.
Angela was a principled girl when it came to sex. She wasn’t for sex before marriage and she told Uche who agreed. It seemed all was well between them.
As is normal with most young men however, Uche wasn’t satisfied with the occasional kiss. He longed for more and soon Angela responded. They found themselves in compromising positions quite a few times but Angela always managed to take control and they always stopped short of having sex!
On this faithful day, however, they had gone to see a movie and ended up at Uche’s house. His parents being out of the house, both parties relaxed and well, one thing led to another. Uche asked if Angela wanted to see another movie and she agreed. It turned out to be an ‘Adult’ movie!
Uche brought out a bottle of wine and wine glasses in hand, they sipped the wine and settled on a Couch to watch the movie. According to Angela, alarm Bells soon started ringing in her ears but she ignored it thinking that she was in control of the situation.
She agreed when questioned that she went along with the kissing and heavy petting but she insisted that she didn’t want sex! She tried to plead with Uche when it became apparent that things were getting out of hand but he just wouldn’t listen!
She tried to get up from the couch but it was impossible. According to her, Uche was like a possessed man! He pleaded passionately at first and then he became quite forceful. According to Angela, she was helpless and the unthinkable happened!
I turned to the three ladies to hear the views which had surprisingly become divided! Two of them were of the opinion that Uche should have stopped when Angela objected to his sexual advances.
The other lady, Dr Ajayi, was quite unimpressed with Angela’s sobs!
“If you didn’t want to have sex, what were you doing alone with a boy, drinking wine, watching adult movies? I am not going to fall for those Crocodile tears young lady. You have only yourself to blame!”
The room grew quite and gradually all eyes turned to me. I hadn’t voiced my opinion and I was the Chairman of the committee. I cleared my throat.

Suddenly, a shrill whistle shattered his progress at calming his nerves! Luke opened his eyes and saw Shaq, his friend and colleague at work poking at his ribs and pointing towards an attractive Lady who had just walked past where they stood!
“I’d give an arm and a leg to lay my hands on that hot babe!” Shaq gushed his features wearing a lecherous grin!
Luke was not unfamiliar with his friend’s preoccupation with the opposite sex. He turned away in disgust, leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes again.
“Sometimes, I wonder if you’re flesh and blood at all. Didn’t you see her?” Shaq retorted angered by Luke’s lack of interest.
Luke opened his eyes and smiled patiently at his friend.
“I’m flesh and blood all right. I’m just not stupid!”
Shaq leaned against the wall and looked at his friend closely. “What’s gotten into you these days man? You’re not the same old Luke. You don’t seem interested in babes anymore. Are you sick or something?”
Luke took a deep breath before speaking.
“Shaq, there’s something I’ve wanted to tell you. I don’t want to live like we used to anymore! I met this girl about a month ago and things just haven’t been the same again!”
Shaq caught his friend’s elbow and gave him a slight push.
“You’re kidding me man! I warned you about that Lola girl. Don’t tell me you’re in love with her. She’s weird, man! There’s something about her that I just can’t figure out!”
Luke smiled at his friend. “She’ a Christian Shaq. I’ve never met anyone like her. She’s just so different and she makes a lot of sense. I wanted to hit on her when we first met but she was so cool and she treated me with so much respect! She said she didn’t want to date me but she didn’t see why we couldn’t be friends.”
Shaq gave his friend a curious look “And—”
“Well, I talk with her now and again and we’re just friends but I see a lot of things different now. Take sex for example. She explained why sex before marriage is wrong and she made perfect sense!”
“I’m listening,” Shaq commented still puzzled.
“It’s like this,” Luke continued. “God made man and God is like man’s manufacturer. Every manufacturer has a manual for his products. You have to obey the instructions in the manual if you don’t want to damage the product. Lola says God’s manual for man is the Bible and the manual says not to have sex before marriage!”
Shaq stared at his friend, amazed.
“And this makes sense to you?”
“Well she showed me from the Bible. She also showed me that God has a purpose for my life and I’m so special that God sent his son Jesus to come to this world to pay the penalty for my sins. He died in my place!”
“I can’t believe this, Luke.” Shaq looked alarmed “What’s happening to you, man?”
Luke grabbed his friend and eye balled him. “There is nothing wrong with me Shaq, you’re the one something is wrong with! Are you really happy hitting on girls, partying and just cruising on? Does life have any meaning to you? Are we just here on earth to run around, spend our lives working to get rich, get married, raise kids, buy a house and then die off? Don’t you think there’s got to be more to life than that?”
Shaq was quiet as he thought over what Luke had just said.
“I guess you’re making sense,” he finally admitted.
“Of course I’m making sense. If the Manufacturer says I can get damaged by getting into premarital sex, I have enough sense to know he’s right. Look Shaq, I don’t know about you but I’m going to spend more of my time studying the Bible. I want to find out a lot more about what the manual says about me!”
The pretty lady walked back and past the two friends. This time however, Shaq didn’t even notice her! He was deep in thought, pondering over what he had just heard!
